Out of necessity, he took a job with a veterinarian to help pay his tuition and living expenses while in college. It was this experience that developed his passion for the veterinary profession. The challenge and diversity provided by veterinary practice were exactly what he needed to maintain compassion for his profession. After completing his undergraduate studies at West Virginia University, he was accepted to the University of Georgia College Of Veterinary Medicine, where he earned his doctorate degree. It was there that he met his wife, Dr. Myra Burnsed Ammermon.
